The creators of Myst refute accusations of excessive use of AI in Firmament
Cyan Studio, which created the famous Myst game, has recently criticized the use of artificial intelligence when developing its new Firmament game. In a detailed statement published on Twitter, the developers denied the allegation that most of the game was created using artificial intelligence tools.
This statement sounded in response to recent statements by a number of media outlets that II was largely used in creating the game content. One of these statements – the header from Kotaku – read: "There are many things generated by artificial intelligence in the new game of Myst studio".
Cyan denied these accusations, saying: "Unfortunately, articles have recently been published, which were implied (especially in headlines) that Cyan created most of Firmament using artificial intelligence tools. This is categorically incorrect and misleads, and we are disappointed and upset that this is happening".
The developers additionally explained the use of artificial intelligence, saying: "The voice in the game Firmament was announced 100% to the talented member of our developers team, who decided not to indicate his name". They confirmed that the voice was modulated with the help of artificial intelligence tools, but with full permission and under the control of the actor.
Cyan also admitted that their developer team used AI tools to write a story, but emphasized that this was done only to experiment with how the team’s own information will be presented in the game. The team clarified that "With the exception of a small handful of described texture assets, no AI tools were used in any of the aspects of the Cyan work to create peace or art".
Speaking of the human talents standing beyond the game, Cyan added: "We are disappointed that their contribution is minimized and overshadowed by egregious speculations on the use of us tools". They assured that although the tools of artificial intelligence helped in the development of a certain content, "Absolutely nothing in this small part of the content for the game was generated and used directly from these services without careful human supervision and review".
Cyan replied to his subscribers on Kickstarter, who expressed disappointment about the use of AI tools "These tools are in the gray zone for many, but we hope that the exact context (instead of a piquant title) will help you clarify the situation". The team hoped that this detailed explanation would give a more clear idea of how II was used in the development of Firmament.
